Shredder9CB is a normal offering from ChessBase, just like Fritz or Junior. It
is what is needed for first time buyers. The problem with ChessBase is that they
have no means to upgrade current users reasonably.

SMK did many of us a favor, by offering Shredder 9 UCI along with an updated
interface and new book for a discounted price to current users. Here, new users
will pay the higher fees once, then pay lower fees on an upgrade path should SMK
hold to this sales plan.

OK, we still have limitations. I guess the best solution is one like Gandalf 6.0
- a UCI engine along with an opening book that can be used in any interface. Or
maybe a book import/export facility.
