Joseph,

I bought the Shredder 9 UCI from Stefan and loaded the engine into my Chessbase
interface (where it kicks all the other engine's a**). I see neither of those
problems with my engine. It likes to play e4 the majority of time with White,
but it *will* play other moves ... I have seen it do so. Additionally, I set up
a bare board position and then put Black King on e8, White King on e1, White
Bishop on f1, and White Knight on g1. Shredder 9 announces mate in 28
*instantly*. So, it is using tablebases. It may be true that it is not using
the online databases properly (I haven't checked this and don't really care,
personally), but if you define the tablebase path on your hard drive when you
are setting up Shredder 9 UCI, then it will use them when playing. Hope this
has been helpful.
