I really don't understand how this can be a debate. A tuned book is an obvious improvement: any engine will handle some lines better than others, and going from 50% to 60% is an improvement of 70 elo or so. And when you consider the potential for laying traps and the general higher quality I think a really optimal book could easily give 100 elo or more. It is an easy experiment to try if you are really curious: just play Crafty with your book against Fritz and compare to the score of Crafty with book.bin (no bookc) out of 200 games and report the score to us. anthony
