A good way to ruin a project is to throw in way too much
concept. IMHO, you were doing fine till you said PERL.
I, too, decided to write a new engine. The design has a
lot of concept in it -- very object oriented so that I can
easily switch in and out algorithm due to levels of abstraction.
Also, it is designed from the beginning to be easily parallelized.
But, doing so in PERL seems closer to lunacy than grins. Just
doing your original concept would produce many grins. Using a
better performing language (given your modularity desires I suggest
C++), will produce a better performing engine which will lead to
even more grins.
Also, perl seems selfdefeating. You want to be very modular and
object-oriented will do you even better, so why perl?
