Maybe they wanted to enter, but could not get ready in time. It is hard to know someone's intent. I do not think that you should assume the worst. But think about what they have at stake anyway. They want reward if risk is involved. One possible solution is to have an "unofficial" host for each professional program. Someone highly involved in computer chess like Leo or Volker would be good, because it would be just as interesting to chat with them as with the original authors. So, someone who has a nice machine might run Shredder. The same for each of the other professional programs. But if the amateur authors do not want that, I would say just forget about it. During the past decade, the WMCCC and WCCC have become the European chess championship. Since they still have the 'official' tag "world champion" hanging on it, it is a very good event for them. They do not face as tough of competition as they would in a CCT and they get a more important sounding victory. I do not think we will ever again see a professional program volunteer for the CCT. Instead they will play in the WMCCC puppet event and get a more prestigious sounding title in a far easier event. So if we want to see the professional programs involved, we should enter them ourselves.
