I operated Crafty in the Komputer Korner Kup II (a correspondence tournament).

I enjoyed it immensely.

I fretted and steamed when the eval fell below zero.

I felt incredible elation when the eval soared.

In the end, it was a draw.

I did not offer any suggestions to the crafty code base by that time.   But
crafty was (and still is) my favorite chess engine.

I felt pleasure when my favorite engine did well.

I don't think that is hard to understand.  I did not feel that I offered
anything to the mix other than a bit of time (and that was not difficult since
it only ran at night.).
