I am the author of two engines. When one of them is in a tournament,
it is not a pride thing. Especially, in CCT or WCCC it is mostly the
fun of participation and conversation with others (social).
If I couldn't participate in a tournament and needed an operator,
I would think that they might get some satisfaction out of helping
and maybe some benefit from the social part of the tournament.
I would like to see more amateur engines in the CCT's. Seems odd
that we don't have over 100 participants (notice I use the word
participant instead of competitor).
This past entrant in CCT7 was a new program of mine that played its first
game of chess the week before the tournament -- it lost to me badly.
I was quite behind my planned development schedule, but entered for the
fun of it. I expected it to finish last due to its youth, but despite
all the bugs and lack of various techniques and algorithms it did not.
Even when it lost, it was fun.
I think it is okay for operators to have fun too.
