Subject: Bad opening book programming (Dedicated) <-- bait for SteveB :)

I was watching season 5 episode 14 of the Startrek the next generation today.

Right in the beginning, Lieutenant Commander Data and Counselor Deanna Troi are
playing chess and Data ends up losing the game to Troi.

The seen goes like this. data says commenting after the last move Troi makes:

The characteristic response to the Kriskov Gambit is to counter with an el`Mitra
Exchange, particularly since I have already taken both your rooks.
By missing that opportunity, you have left your king vulnerable.

Then we see Troi smile and make her move which results in a mate in seven thus
winning against Data.

Then we see Data saying how unexpected that last move of hers was. Which lets me
believe that up to that point he was playing from his book without even
thinking. if he were thinking, his positronic brain surely would have seen the
forced mate in 8 moves.

I think this is very poor programming by Dr. Noonien Soong. He should have
included traps like this in to the opening book of Data's chess program.

Anyways I got to go now. I am receiving several distress calls :)

Beam me up Scotty Regards

Murat ...
