Tanya, Yes, curiously, Shredder 9, Junior 9, Fritz 8, and Tiger 15 do not get this and want to play Ke2, which only draws after e3. Virtually all of my other engines get the solution, many very quickly: Hiarcs (9 and 8), Gandalf (6 and 4.32), Ruffian, Pro Deo, Deep Sjeng, List, Aristarch, Yace, SOS, LG Revival, Fruit, Crafty, Tao, AnMon, Comet, Dragon, Gothmog, Amyan, Goliath Light, Ktulu, all get it. Even such weak engines as Faile, Inmichess and BamBam get it! (Although I admit that they may not be playing the move for the right reasons ...) That really made me chuckle. BamBam, Inmichess and Faile get it, but the mighty Shredder 9 and Junior 9 do not, even after an extended think to 34 plies or more! Of the Fritzes, I found that F8 and F6 did not get it, but Fritz 5.32 did get it in about 40 seconds. How strange that most of the weaker engines (even very weak ones) get this, but the very best do not (excepting Hiarcs, which qualifies as one of the very best, but does get it). Yace, known to be a very good endgame engine, even announces mate in 61 (!!) in about 3 minutes. I'm not sure if 61 is correct, but I had Yace play the position out against me, and it did play to mate ... it knew what to do. Incidentally, I looked up the historical Linares info on the Chessbase website, and Kasparov has played 156 games prior to this year's Linares, with a total performance rating of 2827. He's won or tied for first 8 times and 2nd place 3 times in 13 tries. Wow. I don't particularly like him as a person, but you have to admit that he has "got game." Mark
