Each piece had a coil winding which identified it, thus ensuring that one could easily set up a position without having to key anything into the machine regarding which piece was where. Obviously piece recognition is not a problem at the start of a game as the machine only needs to keep track of where a piece or pawn has moved from its initial square. Terry
