It's seems to me it is quite the opposite. UCI is very bloated in its communication where as XBoard only needs 4-5 characters per move. Of course it's not really an issue unless you play directly from the console, but then again the geek-to-normal ratio could be quite high in the engine user/developer population :-) -S.
