Actually, the US did make a big deal out of Fischer's victory over the Russians (Spassky), and Fischer was offered contracts, invited to the White House etc., but Fischer was very foolish, and turned his future down! Fischer was brilliant at chess, but stupid in many of the basics of life. Too bad, really, we as chessplayers lost out as well.
