Thanks for the compliment!  It is not entirely true, of course.
There are lots of much stronger engines.  But among the
open source engines, Glaurung is probably one of the
10-20 strongest at the moment, and in this sense you are
right:  There is some danger that Glaurung could be an
attractive starting point for a cloner.

I hope so, too, but if it ever happens I am confident that the many
observant testers will quickly grow suspicious.

I also recently discovered a bug in Glaurung which can be very
useful for detecting clones.  The bug is entirely harmless in the
sense that it will almost certainly never have any effect on the
playing strength, but it is also very easy to see by inspecting the
executable file (if you know what to look for, of course).  Needless
to say, I will not explain exactly where and what the bug is, and I
will not fix it in future versions.  :-)
