I am with you. Something smells fishy. I think this has everything to do with
Kasparov being rebuffed by Fide. So Kasparov is taking his marbles and going
home. If a WC cycle can be worked out by Fide that Kasparov likes. I bet
Kasparov will play again. This looks like a power play by Kasparov.
