I have been experimenting with various chess pieces on my two Fidelity Phantoms, since one of them came with wooden Novag pieces. Today I discovered that the Applied Concepts pieces that came with my Boris 2.5 MGS computer work great on the Phantoms. They work even better than do the Novag Emerald Classic pieces that I had been using on one of them. The knights on the Novag set would sometimes bump and react, magnetically, with a pawn so that one of the pieces would then topple over. This happened mostly on the knights opening moves. This does not occur with the Boris pieces. The diameter of the Boris knights base is actually a bit larger than those in the Novag set, but the pawn bases are smaller. I think that it is the larger pawn base, plus the fact that the Novags have considerably stronger magnets, that causes them to have the mishaps. The wooden Novag pieces are much nicer looking than the plastic Applied Concepts ones, but functionality is the greater issue for me. Dick Schneiders
