During testing with GPL code, can the author say, 1. Please test this code, with no mention of the nature of the source. 2. Please test this code, it's the modification of another program's source. 3. Please test this code, it's the modification of a GNU GPL program's source, whose identity will become known only if the changes are published. 4. Please test this code, it's the modification of [Fruit, Gnuchess, etc.]. What does the GPL require? I'm just curious...I realize the situation with Toga is different, because the author identified the source as being other than a GPL program. Seems that #1 would be allowed by the GPL, if the only requirement is that the origin of the source be made known only upon publication, not during testing. However, this leads to the problem of the author making some changes, then some more changes, then more changes, and then finally "making the code his own," and never disclosing the origin. The testers would be unaware that they had ever tested GPL code. The author might never say so, and might not be required by the GPL to say so.
