Yes it is true, all the cool kids are doing it and since I recently rewrote my engine from scratch and added only UCI support I was thinking about the same thing. I think it might be easier to use Winboard + polygot although I haven't tried to connect to ICC yet. I've heard that Arena isn't a good interface for chess servers.
