Ah, almost certainly from "The International Obfuscated C Code Contest"
(http://ioccc.org/).  Some really magic programs there.

That (pre-microcomputer) APL program stuck in my memory, but considering other
responses in this thread it wouldn't be considered such a feat anymore.
