The Hydra entity is very interesting to computer chess. However, I have no dog in this argument, and have a few opinions as an amateur bystander. If my opinions are flawed, please point them out to me. I would like to make the comparison of Hydra to auto racing. How fast do you want to go is directly related to “How much money do you want to spend.” Is this not the same for Hydra and its team? Couldn’t any computer related corporation do the same with good people who understand the technique involved, and have deep pockets? It seems to me IBM made this point in 1997 with Deep blue. Is Hydra any different in the relation to auto racing: “How strong a computer entity you want to have depends on how much money you want to spend.” Is Hydra’s technology so special that only Donninger and his team have the skills to build something like Hydra? I really don’t see anything special about Hydra that is not directly related to deep pockets. DHM
