>It shouldn't mattter what you are looking at when playing, Shirov and Ivanchuk >are looking at the wall or ceiling while playing :) >But if it should matter, you are on the safe side when using the dgt-board. It shouldn't, but it does, it depends on the individual really. Look at Amber where some of the best players in the world play blindfold (and rapid, but not as important here) against eachother, and you will see (no pun intended) a much bigger difference between the top scorer and the the lowest scorer, in this case anand on +7! and Topalov on -5!, i am pretty sure that you would not see that difference if they where playing chess under classical conditions. When Shirov, Ivanchuck and all the other super strong GM's look at the ceiling while playing, it is of course not for the whole game and i suspect the purpose is to go through combinations without being distracted by the visual input you get from looking at the board + when humans are creative, they tend to look up. Criminal detectives use this as a crude method (among many other indicators of course) to detect if someone is telling the truth or not. If it truely didn't matter what visual input you have at your disposal when playing, in theory you wouldn't need any visual input at all. You could also say that it shouldn't really matter what time control you play in terms of your strength, but if that was true Hawkeye would be world champ at all diciplines, or would that mean Kasparov would be the best bullet player in the world? well, however you turn it, the fact of the matter is that we are all different and excel at different aspects, paces etc.
