It's not possible to castle there, because the Bishop is still in the way. Here's a line that transposes into that: 1. e4 e5 2. Nc3 Nc6 3. f4 exf4 4. Nf3 g5 5. Bc4 g4 6. O-O gxf3 7. d4 Nxd4 Here Crafty has in book after Bxf4: Bc5 Be3, and black is ahead more than 5 pawns! Instead of the Bxf4 you have above, Qxd4 seems better, but still losing. >Any thoughts? Nc3 Nc6 3. f4 exf4 4. Nf3 g5 5. Bc4 g4 6. O-O * [ECO "C25"] [Opening "Vienna"] [Variation "Hamppe-Muzio, Dubois variation"] 1. e4 e5 2. Nc3 Nc6 3. f4 exf4 4. Nf3 g5 5. Bc4 g4 6. O-O gxf3 7. Qxf3 Ne5 8. Qxf4 Qf6 * [ECO "C25"] [Opening "Vienna"] [Variation "Pierce gambit"] 1. e4 e5 2. Nc3 Nc6 3. f4 exf4 4. Nf3 g5 5. d4 * [ECO "C25"] [Opening "Vienna"] [Variation "Pierce gambit, Rushmere attack"] 1. e4 e5 2. Nc3 Nc6 3. f4 exf4 4. Nf3 g5 5. d4 g4 6. Bc4 gxf3 7. O-O d5 8. exd5 Bg4 9. dxc6 * Most of the Vienna lines do appear to give black a good advantage, but there is the occasional line that has an advantage for white, such as: 1. e4 e5 2. Nc3 Nc6 3. f4 exf4 4. Nf3 g5 5. Bc4 g4 6. O-O gxf3 7. d4 d5 3. exd5 Bg4 9. Qd2 Bg7 Also, if the ECO line [Variation "Hamppe-Muzio, Dubois variation"] is followed, it ends with white down just over a pawn, instead of 2 or 3 pawns like most other possible variations. Jeremiah
