There is plenty of data supporting the hypothesis that programs perform better with every ply they gain in the search. Increasing the time limit by 3x or 4x would gain a ply for almost all programs. Thus, such an increase in time limit would produce better performance from the programs. When I say "perform better", I don't mean better relative to other programs. I mean certain moves are better than they would have been with less search time. Thus, increasing the overall playing strength of a given program. Giving the programs 3x more time is the same as giving all of them a 3x faster processor. Yes, I am interested in the longer time controls. Yes, I am interested in shorter time controls. Yes, I am interested in the current time controls.
