Karpov did not rise above 2700 until a couple of years later. The only thing besides dumb luck that could have tipped the outcome a little one way or the other would be their respective styles, but I don't think it would have been enough to overcome the big differential. There are a few other factors, but I think they are already reflected in the ratings. Today it is anyones guess. It would certainly be fun to find out though.
