Subject: Analysis no. of moves displayed

Why do engines sometimes display long lines and sometimes short lines?  For
instance if an engine is analyzing a position at 12 ply it might display a best
line 12 moves long, and then when it sees an improvement it might just display
the first 3 ply.  Hasn't it made up its mind?  Or if the engine (junior in
particular) is at 16+ ply it might display only the first 2 ply in its analysis.

Puzzled!
