It's quite simple to program the KQKR ending, here is:

1) A piece square table that drives the lonely king into a corner.

2) A king_to_king tropism routine that follows the lonely king wherever it goes.

That's all, when the lonely king is in a corner or is on the edge of the board
search will do the rest, usually 8-9 plies is enough.
