The most usual reason is a Transposition Table (or TT) hit. The engine could go through the trouble of digging out the rest of the line in the TT, but there is a good chance the completing the effort will be thwarted by an overwritten TT entry. The quality of the moves further down in a line diminish anyways, so it is no great loss.
