You are right in saying that networked PCs are best.  The cheapest way of doing
this is with a crossover cable, assuming that you have the proper ethernet
adaptors in both machines.  It's also possible to use a crossover serial cable,
a technique oft used prior to the advent of inexpensive ethernet cards.

Given that your machines have ethernet (are there any desktops made in the past
five years that don't?), I'd suggest going one step beyond a crossover cable and
buy a low cost hub or better yet, a switch.  That's because sooner or later
you'll want to hook up more than two machines.
