A striking counterexample to the 'most chess engines will find a winning move' was the FRITZ-FRITZ match played in 2002 without 5-man EGTs. In a KNKBB endgame of 49 moves, the defender conceded a depth of 169 and the attacker conceded a depth of 210, the result being that the depth only decreased by 8 over the 49 moves. g
