I can imagine. Apart from all the talk about 'killer lines' initially directed
at the Mchess programs, I also seem to remember a story where Fidelity, after
having tied with Mephisto for the World Championship, had decided to have the
machine start every game with 1.a3 (or something like that) for the tie-breaker
match in order to contour Mephisto's opening preparation.
