An excellent suggestion, but I think the low-end PowerBook at US$1499 is
currently
a better buy.

In fact it doesn't.  The chess engine in Apple's Chess.app used to be gnuchess,
but they replaced it with the GPL version of Sjeng in OS X 10.3 (or was it
10.2?).
I doubt that any of the regular readers of this forum would be happy with
Chess.app,
but of course there are several other chess programs (free and commercial)
available.
