Spinrite is as good as any I know of, however, NO software will correct a
hardware failure.

The software "works", and it may tell you the problem is fixed, but the problem
will NOT be fixed, and will re-appear very soon. Because the software works "ON
TOP" of the hardware, it has no chance to fix the hardware, and may simply fool
itself into believing that some "fix" has indeed taken place.

The ONLY thing that may help, and this tends to be just temporary, is where the
utility program can "map" a particular sector of the drive as "bad", and just
avoid using that part of the disk. The obvious problem is that once one sector
goes bad, how long will it be before another sector goes bad? And then can you
be sure it's JUST a problem with that disk sector, or could it be a more general
problem just starting up with the read head or positioning arm? :(

My advice is to immediately transfer all your data from that drive onto a
reliable drive, and use the faulty disk for a door stop.

They work very well in that capacity. :)

The only hardrive maintenance "program" that really works, is the hardrive
replacement program.
