Fancy words for something easy. Suppose I consider a particular opponents move, and it turns out that it is no better than simply skipping his turn and letting me move twice. Such a pathway is very unlikely to be a good move -- he will probably do something else. So I won't bother with that one. However, sometimes it gets you into trouble. Especially in late endgame or rare midgame zugzwang positions.
