No doubt.  Ever seen GM Walter Browne give one of his "blindfold lectures"?  He
plays through a game, gives analysis, backs up many times, often so quickly that
the people trying to follow using real chessboards get lost, and he patiently
stops and recites the position description perfectly.  GMs can do that sort of
thing.  Of course we know they don't memorize opening moves, because computers
do that perfectly and we know it is illegal.  :)
