(I didn't read this before writing my first reply above.) While I still doubt that it's a good testing method for engines, I know this is a very good training method for human players. I had studied like that many years ago, using a book with commented master games, simply covering the next moves each. The studying player will be able to make his own consideration in "high level" midgame positions. This can be extended by testing your own, different ideas against a program. Recommendable idea!
