Free interfaces found here (along with some commercial ones): http://www.aarontay.per.sg/Winboard/interface.html My recommendations for free stuff: 1. Arasan has its own GUI and anyone can install it. 2. Arena is easy to install and fiddle with. 3. Winboard is the best for online play. 4. Jose runs anywhere (Windows or Linux or whatever -- it's Java). 5. SCID is a free chess database that supports some free engines. My recommendations for Commercial Stuff: 1. Shredder UCI is probably the strongest program in the world 2. ChessMaster is inexpensive and full-featured 3. ChessAssistant is the best chess database 4. Bookup is nice for opening study 5. The Lokasoft stuff is easy to install and use with online purchase and has some "new" chess engines not found elsewhere. But, as always, IMO-YMMV.
