If you want to solve mates, then Chest and Popeye are hard to beat.
There are UCI versions available.

If you want to find best moves, then Shredder is amazing as a commercial program
and free programs like:
Aristarch
Crafty
Delfi
Fruit
GreenLightChess
Ktulu
LG
List
Movei
Pepito
Pharaon
Pro
Quark
Ruffian
SOS
SlowChess
SmarThink
Tao
Thinker
Yace

are all fantastic at problem solving.

Arena has a nice interface for this. Tragically, it does not output the
solutions as EPD records, but only ChessAssistant (commercial product) is able
to that I am aware of.
