You are wrong in proposing a split between calculations and patterns, because
it's one whole process. The only thing that vanishes with age is speed; both in
calculating and perceiving. However experience does always increase with every
year you get older. Here's a good remedy for your main sorrow (losing against
chess computers): just extend the time control and you will remain master on
your chessboard. Fritz allows you to grant yourself a human bonus which isn't
unfair because machine doesn't know what to do with all the time...
