At Tim Krabbe's excellent chess site http://www.xs4all.nl/~timkr/chess/chess.html in the Open Diary section http://www.xs4all.nl/~timkr/chess2/diary.htm he discusses in number 283 the board sizes of 3x3, 4x4 and 5x5 chess, so alternate board sizes aren't completely without interest. I'm not saying all programs should support such board sizes, but a well designed program should be able to accomodate a larger than normal number of pieces with little or no additional trouble to the programmer.
