You should ensure the GUI is updated.
Like the other posting says, ponder on may be bad.
The Shredder book is for Shredder and made for it's style, while the Fritz book
is suited for Fritz!

I've seem other having similar problems like you describe, but Shredder 9 CB
doesn't seem to have a "general problem".
It works fine on both the comps I've installed it on, and doesn't lose a lot.
