Blaise Pascal invented the first mechanical arithmetic calculator back in the
18th century, reportedly to assist with calculating probabilities for various
gambling games.  Until that point it was commonly believed that tasks of
addition, subtraction, and the like could only be done by humans and were proof
positive of intelligence.  I'm sure that there was at the time much fascination
with Pascal's calculator as there has been more recently with traditional A/B
chessplaying programs.

As with Pascal's human powered number cruncher, once it works, it's not real AI
anymore.
