Are there any guidelines for purchasing PC's specifically for getting the most out of chess software? Do I go for speed or more memory for example? It seems like the playing programs can use up to 64b meg RAM for hash tables, so why get more? On the other hand I was told 64meg of RAM is not enough for printing an Opening Survey in Chessbase 7. As for speed, would a 450 mhz do THAT much better than a 400 mhz, or for that matter a 266 mhz ? What about BUS speeds, L2 cache? Do Laptops somehow not perform as well as desktops? Are there ways to handle virtual memory that we should know about for programs like Chessbase 7 and Fritz.32 ? Of course I know the principle of buying "the most you can afford", but I'm curious if anyone knows what the guidelines should be. Another question I have is about Windows NT. Do most of the programs run under it? Are the DOS programs totally DEAD under NT? I think I read Microsoft's next version of Windoze will really be NT. As usual, all feedback is welcome. regards
