One reply at the root would make no sense.  You extend the only move by one ply.
Why not do the same thing by just searching another ply deeper on the next
iteration?

Re-capture falls into the same class.  I extend them to prevent wasting two
plies of search on a capture/re-capture sequence.  I've now played the capture
(my opponent did that is) and now I am committed.  What is the point for
extending this move since I have to make it to restore material balance?

Out of check would also extend every move at the root.  I'll just do another
iteration instead.
