My opinion on Bookup and backsolving: Backsolving in the Bookup position database program is nothing more than an implementation of the standard negamax algorithm for evaluation propagation. The technique works in Bookup the same way as it does in conventional chessplaying programs. The accuracy of the results is of course dependent on the quality of the terminal position evaluations and the selection of the positions themselves in the subtree. Bookup is a good program; I had a copy many years ago when I still had an MS-DOS notebook. I've even thought of writing a version for MacOS/X. Also, Bookup was perhaps the very first commercial program to use open data standards instead of closed proprietary ones; a fairly courageous decision back in the early days. I have no hesitation recommending Bookup to tournament players of any strength.
