I start seeing endgame tablebase hits when there are 16 pieces on the board, at
least.  And sometimes I will see them with more pieces on the board.  But when
you get to 16, the probe rate will begin to rise, and by the time you get to
8-10 pieces left, you are frying the disks full-speed...  So if by "middlegame"
you mean 16 pieces or less, then yes.  I'd probably call that late middlegame
since 1/2 the total material is gone.  Or even early endgame depending on what
pieces are still left.
