As many of you will have recognized, Pavel is doing a very long match between Yace Paderborn and Aristarch 4.5. I thought, it should be interesting, to take a closer look at the statistics. Until now, about 13000 games were played. Yace was using positional learning. I think, it did not use book learning for the first 10000 games or so. Possibly it was using book learning later, but I am not sure. Pavel had intended to use book learning, but it turned out, that by default Yace book learning will not do anything (by purpose) when the time control is faster than 5 minutes. The games were played at 2 minutes. I mentioned this some days ago, and perhaps Pavel has set Yace up to use book learning even at this fast time control. The results seem to indicate this - results at later games are clearly better for Yace, than results of former games. But perhaps, pure positional learning helped here. Does anybody know the exact details of learning mechanisms in Aristarch? For the statistics, I used the pgn from Pavel's site: http://www.pavs.org/new.rar (Pavel, I guess the name of the file could be improved, for example something like yace_aristarch_20050517). It turned out, that Yace played a few more games as white, than as black. In the "sub-matches", always Yace started as white. So, when the last sub-match was an odd number, Yace also had white in the last game. I deleted all those last games with black. This were 25 games - of course, it won't really matter in a match of now 13000 games. After deleting those games, the overall result from Yace point of view is 6315.0 - 6663.0 ( 48.66%) white + 2732 w= 1591 w- 2166 b+ 1942 b= 1691 b- 2856 One question could be: was the performance about equal during the match, or did it change significantly. It turns out, that the performance clearly got better for Yace. Even in earlier stages of the match, where book learning was certainly off. I give the details (that are hopefully self explaing) at the end of my post. One can ask: where the games statistically independent. For this, I did some Monte Carlo simulation of match results. I also give the details at the end of my post. I am aware, that those results can be got analytically correct without Monte Carlo simulation, but I was too lazy. With some experience in Monte Carlo simulations, it is much easier and less error prone to code (I can give the source code, if anybody should be interested). And of course the results will be the same. From this already, we can conclude, that the games were not independent, and that learning did work (in favor of Yace). Another interesting statistics is already on Pavel's site - results for each individual ECO code (for white and black)http://www.pavs.org/opening_statistics.txt . A smart book cooker might be able to tune the Yace book, based on this statistic. If anybody really should be interested - I might be able to give even more detailled statistics.
