Shredder and Junior were both amateurs who became professional shortly after winning the championship, but I believe both had plans to do this before they won. I've had plans to sell mine forever, and I've entered four tournaments as an amateur. I always make my situation clear and let the ICCA decide. I don't have a job, when people ask me what I do I either tell them I'm a babysitter or I work on a chess program. It could be argued that I am an extremely unsuccessful professional. At a WMCCC two professional programs tied for first place. Two amateurs and a new professional (box on table) tied for third place. This professional made a brief attempt to retroactively apply for amateur status, in order to be eligible for the playoff for the amateur title (the point was moot since this program had fewest Bukholz points). I own numerous amateur programs that I've paid money for mail-order. The IBM program was a professional entry in 1995. I inquired about this at the time and I was told they'd never even suggested that they were amateur. And you also have Bob, who is a college professor who is known in the academic world for doing computer chess, and he's been sponsored with gazillion dollar machines that no professional could afford. bruce
