At the present state of the art any strong player, given loose time
controls, can beat the chess engine. Similarly any GOOD player who can see
through some of a particular chess engine's tactics is also capable of beating
it.

There are several reasons why the foregoing is true.

      1. Whilst it is possible to produce a silicon chip which is virtually
unbeatable, it would be impractical to produce such a monster until the speed of
the computer is on an order greater than obtains at present. That is, it would
take too long for the chess engine to arrive at the best move.
      2. Also, for reasons of lack of speed at present, no chess engine can
discover a soft or quiet move in the middle game, or find one in the ending to
save the game.
      3. Presently, if a chess engine is in a static position the engine is
prone to send a Knight on an extended tour to circumvent blocking pawns. This
can be fatal, or at the best permit the opponent to force a draw.

Other and different ploys have been noted that defeats the chess engine. - Jim.
