Depends on your engine, OS and compiler. You may gain a speed increase going from Athlon to AMD64/Opteron if it's a bitboard-based engine (such as crafty). Back when the AMD64 and Opteron's came out, there was a lot of discussions about it so I recommend checking the archives. For compiling I believe you have two options: * For linux, gcc and the associated tool chain has a 64bit mode version. This could be a topic in itself (non 64bit mode linux using a 64bit gcc toolchain, or running all out 64bit linux, etc). I dont have access to a AMD64/opteron so I haven't really checked it out. * For Windows, I believe there is a Visual Studio .Net 64bit beta edition that you can download from MS's website. I'm sure someone else here can give more details about that. A quick google search I found this: http://lab.msdn.microsoft.com/vs2005/get/ Hope this helps a bit :) Sincerely, Joshua Shriver On May 27, 2005 at 09:02:37, S J J wrote: >Can anyone tell me what NPS speedup to expect on an AMD64 versus >an Athlon assuming that the speed grade is the same? > > To get my engine to run on the AMD64 does it need to be >recompiled.
