Depends on your engine, OS and compiler.

You may gain a speed increase going from Athlon to AMD64/Opteron if it's a
bitboard-based engine (such as crafty).  Back when the AMD64 and Opteron's came
out, there was a lot of discussions about it so I recommend checking the
archives.

For compiling I believe you have two options:

* For linux, gcc and the associated tool chain has a 64bit mode version. This
could be a topic in itself (non 64bit mode linux using a 64bit gcc toolchain, or
running all out 64bit linux, etc). I dont have access to a AMD64/opteron so I
haven't really checked it out.

* For Windows, I believe there is a Visual Studio .Net 64bit beta edition that
you can download from MS's website. I'm sure someone else here can give more
details about that.
