But the main question is whether 2.Rc2 is better than 2.Re1, and it is this question that probably will prevent engines from finding a forced mate in the initial position. Because after 2.Re1 Rd2+ 3.Kf1, Black has three reasonable responses -- 3...Rh2, 3...Rf2+ and 3...Kf3. But 3...Kf3 appears to be best, because it forces 4.Re2 Rd1+ 5.Re1 Rxe1+ 6.Kxe1, which The King says is a Mate in 14 (or less). So, I have shown that it is a mate in no more than 20 moves, but it took a fair amount of forcing moves to show this. From the initial position, it would take The King a very long time. jm
