Thanks to a friend in US I have again in my hands if not the first chess
computer I ever had, at least the first with a fairly decent strengt, the first
to ever win a championship of microcomputers -1981- and the one I have most
loved: Chess Sensory Champion Challenger.
Just inm case you doers not know. this piece of museum had an engine by the
Spracken that in its time was valued 1771 Usa Elo, by now con sidered 1550
normal Elo. Not that much, but pretty strong compared with what was the average
of dedicated units in those times. Even now 1550 means that ou can get a decent
game, the kind you get from a C player any day, without awful mistakes, good
sense of tactics and in fact a capability to smash you any time if you lose
control. For those days that qualities made a great difference. I lost infinite
games due to distractiions that were unrelentingly punished. A 1550 human player
is a mix of good and bad moves. A 1550 cmputer is always 1550 and so, in its
steadiness, cannot be disdained just like that.
I am just experiencing that in this very moment. Only If I am lucky I will get a
draw after mistakes done due to some stupid sense you cannot lose a to a 1550
player. It is a sobering exprience. After so many uncredible strongs programs I
have played since those years, suddenly I discover that to have ben defeated by
those current monster does not imply you must defeat the old litle beast of the
past.
Nevertheless, I am a happy man...
Fernando
